If you're staying in the city, Alamo Square is on good transit from Market St. The 21-Hayes runs right by and the 5-Fulton is 1-2 blocks away. It's a lot easier to take the bus there than to try to find parking. I have a friend who lives facing the Square and there's a good reason he doesn't have a car.
